Art Exhibit: Finding Meaning in Braddock’s Unsmoke Systems

This collective started as a discussion group at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and investigates various approaches to translating meaning in visual imagery. Once a week for the better part of 2009, this group of students, recent graduates, and one faculty member met to discuss and analyze the work of various artists including Rembrandt, Hogarth, Leland Bell, Turner, Amy Sillman, Chardin and many others. The focus was the discussion of what contributed to convey content in visual terms. The categories outlined as lynchpins for analysis included iconography, formalism, the haptic experience and the viewer’s orientation. The presentation of work at Braddock’s Unsmoke Systems gallery site is the culmination of these discussions now posed in visual terms that include various mediums.
